In this generously reviewed NY Times best-seller,Why Does the World Exist? Liveright/Norton, 2012, 307 pp. Jim Holt raises many questions about how the universe/multi-verse could emerge from or return to nothing, if an infinite universe can coexist with an infinite deity, or if never to have existed is really better than to exist only for a limited time. If Holt’s statement on p. 34 is to be taken literally, “the universe was created by a being 100% malevolent, but 80% effectively so” what is the basis of such a conviction? Does the existence of design or beauty seem compatible with a return to chaos or nothingness? Is faith supported at least partly by intelligent design? Is faith compatible with critical thinking? Or does it finally amount to nothing more than self- indoctrination and propaganda. Holt’s efforts may increase further productive thinking about such questions–beyond their present embryonic state. However, he fails to explore the possibility of intelligent design or creation from within.
